Strategies and Tactics. Do you know the difference?

Bing describes a strategy as: “a carefully devised plan of action to achieve a goal, or the
art of developing or carrying out such a plan.”

Tactic as: “a method used or a course of action followed in order to
achieve an immediate or short-term goal.”

An easy way to remember the difference is to relate back to the old pr acronym “RPIE” (Research, Plan, Implement, Evaluate), or “RACE” (Research, Action, Communicate, Evaluate).

Strategy is to Plan, as Tactic is to Action. Once you have finished your research stage and you know what kind of field you are now working in, the next step is to develope a Strategy. This Strategy will determine the steps you will take once you begin to implement your tactic/s.

Tactics are different for many fields, but in marketing or PR we typically strive to remember

these big 5

  1. New-Product Publicity
  2. Product Placement
  3. Consumer Education
  4. Sponsorships
  5. Web Sites

Personally, there are no “basic rules” for PR, but food for thought never hurts.
